Merseyside estate planning: wills

If you haven't already made a Will, don’t worry, you are not alone. No matter your age or personal circumstance, it is vital that you make a Will to ensure clarity around the distribution of your estate following your death.

Making a Will enables you to organise the distribution of your cash and assets following your passing and ensures that those who you believe should benefit from your passing actually do so, without dispute.

There are a variety of reasons why people delay making a Will, with many believing that their loved ones will automatically inherit any passing wealth, or presuming that organising their Will account is not relevant at this point in their life.

However, in reality, putting off making a Will can be extremely detrimental if left until too late, as it could result in some or all of your inheritance being left to the wrong person or state.

Everyone needs to make a Will, in order to feel safe that anything left behind is redirected to the right people. Especially those who own property or other expensive assets, that you wish to leave down to friends, family or charitable causes.

When making a rough estimate of your total worth, take into account your property, possessions, savings, investments, business and anything else you own. Once added together, this will give you an approximate figure of your total worth and what would be passed on, following your passing.

Surely you would want to ensure all of your 'estate' (everything in the list above) is received by those you choose/your loved ones? If you don't make a Will, then you risk your estate being taken by the taxman or those you would prefer not to inherit.

In addition to giving you full control, Estate Planning minimizes the exposure of your estate to several threats, ensures the preservation of your assets and provides total peace of mind.

Your spouse or Civil Partner will not automatically inherit everything you've worked so hard for if you die intestate (without a Will), your children may also be at risk, and an unmarried partner will not be entitled to inherit anything.
